Food Habit and Cultures in Tripura

Though the state Tripura is tiny in its area and distinctly far from the main course of this country but it has its diverse realm in living communities and in their food and culture. Every community living in this tiny state has their different traditions and culture. And when it comes about the food this diversity really helps to give the traditional essence of different communities. So, before going to the restaurant served dishes, it will be good to have an idea about various popular and traditional dishes of this state.

Coming first, I would like to go for the wonderful tribal dishes and their specialties. The most amazing thing about the tribal dishes is they are not heavy with masalas and can be cooked, relished and digested very easily. And among the tribal curries 'Godak' is the most popular one.

Binni rice and Godak

Now 'Godak' actually means a curry where the ingredients are boiled and mixed, not fried. From vegetables to meat, a large variety of ingredients can be used as ingredients for 'Godak'. It tastes amazing when cooked with vegetables and dry fishes. This curry is hot in nature but not spicy with masalas. Here the ingredient takes the responsibility for a great taste not the spices.

Then comes the 'binni' rice. It is a sticky rice. Unlike other rice it is not boiled directly into the water but actually cooked in a packed large leaf which gives a stickiness to the rice and a sweet nature. It tastes really amazing either with the vegetable or pork Godak.

There are lots of other wonderful tribal dishes which are relished by the locals of this state but I will go for an in-depth take on those dishes in another segment.

Now comes the Bengali Dishes. Unlike the tribal dishes the Bengali community has a really large variety in their dishes. The specialty of Bengali dishes lies in their use of variety of spices as well as vegetables. But the modern Bengali dishes are quite different from the century old traditional Bengali Dishes. And what Bengali people really love in their plates is fish.

Bengali people are food lovers and their dishes stunningly reflects their love for food. From very simple 'Sukto' to very delicate 'Coconut Shrimp', every Bengali dish is unique in nature and taste. They know how to use very normal ingredients like 'Aloo-Potol-Kumro' to make both simple and delicate dishes stunningly.

I will cover up a series of different segments on Bengali traditional and modern dishes as it is impossible to sum up the Bengali dishes in one segment.

And after the traditional dishes of the living local people, there comes some Chinese, Mughlai, Nepali dishes which quenches the taste-buds of the food lover of this state. And now in some restaurants Italian and English dishes are also making their successful entries.
